“The only freedom which deserves the name is that of pursuing our own good in our own way, so long as we do not attempt to deprive others of theirs, or impede their efforts to obtain it. Each is the proper guardian of his own health, whether bodily, or mental or spiritual. Mankind are greater gainers by suffering each other to live as seems good to themselves, than by compelling each to live as seems good to the rest. “
John Stuart Mill
“Experience should teach us to be most on guard to protect liberty when the government’s purposes are beneficent. Men born to freedom are naturally alert to repel invasion of their liberty by evil-minded rulers. The greatest dangers to liberty lurk in insidious encroachment by men of zeal, well meaning but without understanding.”
L. Brandeis
These two quotes when combined highlight the struggle American conservatives find themselves in today. A struggle to preserve the very essence of freedom that has defined the United States as a nation and to fight against those who would sacrifice that freedom under the mistaken belief they are working for the greater good. This is a fight for hearts and minds; a fight we can not afford to lose.
